You gave me good steps to follow
And I wish I could fill your shoes.
I wish the apple fell closer to the tree.
You gave me a branch to perch on
But it's time for me to take control.
This isn't about you, just gotta try life on my own.
And when I see fathers proud and smiling
I choke from shame and grief,
And only wish I could be a source for your relief.
We've both done each other so much wrong.
I've made mistakes too big to fix.
And maybe regardless of what I want,
We just don't mix.
And if you knew about my songs
Maybe this would mean something to you.
The only thing I care about,
The only thing I wanna do,
The only thing that sets me apart,
The only thing that makes me me...
Slowly spelling out my heart,
For everyone to read.
And I'm sorry that I hurt you,
And I'm sorry that I let you hurt me,
But your little girl
Is gonna change the world.
You'll see...
You'll see.

Information about this musical artist is sparse. Up and coming may be the best description as I note that she does not yet have an entry in Wikipedia if such a thing could be considered as an indicator that you have "made it". The name Lex Land is, according to an interview with the woman, the short form of her name Alexa Holland. From my reading, I estimate that she was born in 1987 making her now around 24 or 25.

My Personal Note
I discovered this song while going through all the previous episodes of the television show Castle. Being bitten by the bug, the romantic bug, I decided to systematically revisit the entire show by rewatching every single episode. I discovered in the process a number of well-placed songs which capture the mood of the moment and reflect this on again off again romantic cat and mouse game between the show's protagonists, Richard Castle and Kate Beckett.
In season 2, episode 1, Deep in Death, the final scene of the show has a fight between our two love birds. Castle mistakenly thinks he can win points with Beckett by re-opening the murder of Beckett's mother. His enthusiastic presentation of his ideas about the case is met with anger from Beckett who explains how she had tried so hard to drop her own obsession about the unsolved murder. In a conversation with his own daughter, Castle comes to realize his error and apologizes to Beckett. This song by Lex Land plays out at the end.
